Program Aims

Doctor (PhD) of Management program aims to educate Higher Degree by Research (HDR/PhD) students in the concepts and techniques required to understand a range of management disciplines and to carry out research on issues in professional business practice (e.g. Business Management, Industrial Management, Financial Management, Public Administration, Information Technology Management, and …).

Doctorate of Management

Doctor of Management students are expected to complete a dissertation, the final scholarly product of the Doctor (PhD) of Management program at the IAU-UAE branch. This research project is a compilation of students’ academic and practical knowledge about management sub-disciplines.

Program Learning Objectives (PLO)

By the end of the program, graduates are expected to be empowered of:

PLO1: Providing with an opportunity to learn the academic theories, concepts, techniques and their applications with an emphasis on teaching, research, practice in management disciplines

PLO2: Demonstrating academic research skills in management sub-disciplines, including the identification of research problems, consideration of research ethics, review of the existing literature, design of a research study and data analysis and the ability to summarise and interpretation of the research findings

PLO3: Developing knowledge through the application of scientific methods and research into the business world

PLO4: Developing students’ ability to conduct a research project and  evaluate theoretical underpinnings in business, professional, and educational environments

Program Career Outcomes:

The Doctorate of Management degree is a golden ticket for students in their career path. The degree empowers graduates for lucrative and top-level career paths. Upon completing the program, students will be granted the title of doctor. The degree and title help students pursue a broad scope of vocation in a variety of organisations as well as academia. Careers such as C-level positions (corporate executives), consultants, economists, entrepreneurs, directors of departments, university professors, government employees, analysts, etc., are among few careers suitable for graduates.

The “Statistical Analysis” is designed for the PhD of management degree students. This course introduces descriptive and inferential statistics and data exploration methods in business and marketing. The course covers statistical methods and techniques used in exploratory and segmentation analysis.

  1. Consumer Behaviour

The course “Consumer Behaviour” is designed for PhD / Higher Degree by Research (HDR) students in Marketing. This course focuses on the concepts and principles of consumers in the acquisition, consumption, and disposal of goods. This course contains theories of psychology that could help deal with customers and consumers. Therefore, students’ familiarity with the ideas and the concepts in applied psychology in business is essential. Applying these principles can also teach students better ways to identify customer’s rationale and thought.

  1. Advanced Research Methods

The course “Advanced Research Methods” is designed for PhD students of Business Management (Marketing Discipline). This course discusses the quantitative, qualitative and mixed methods research designs. This course will also provide an overview of the essential research design concepts, proposal writing, research problem, data collection tools and procedures, statistical and interpretative analysis, ethical issues and final report presentation.

Marketing research should be at the forefront of innovation in many sectors of the economy. The course “Advanced Marketing Research” is designed for PhD / Higher Degree by Research (HDR) students in Management. This course focuses on the key challenges facing marketing research and provides students with a range of new opportunities to recognise data gathering methods and analyse them until they improve their marketing skills.

  1. Advanced Consumer Behaviour and Marketing

The course “Advanced Consumer Behaviour and Marketing” is designed for higher degree by research (HDR/PhD) students in business management.  This course will develop students’ ability to make valuable contributions to marketing practice through further advanced study and research in the discipline.  Furthermore, this course introduces students to consumer behaviour research and more academic, interpretive, and qualitative orientation.

The course “Advanced Consumer Behaviour and Marketing” also presents relevant material from psychology, anthropology, social and behavioural sciences within the consumer decision process and its main influencing factors.

The course “Sales and Market Management” is designed for the higher degree by research (PhD) students in business management.  The course examines the elements of an effective sales force as a critical component of the organisation’s total marketing effort.

Many firms (including government agencies and non-profit organisations) seek people to put marketing theory into practise by formulating and implementing effective marketing plans.

The course “Advanced International Marketing” is designed for PhD / Higher Degree by Research (HDR) students in Management (Marketing discipline). Students explore marketing from a global perspective to better respond to international opportunities and competitive situations.

This course familiarises the PhD student with the fundamental underpinnings of understanding human behaviour inside public organisations.

The course examines various theories to explain and predict employee behaviour in an organisational context. This course investigates individual and interpersonal behaviour in organisations, including personality, decision-making, personal perceptions, teamwork, conflict, leadership, power, ethics and influence.

The course, “Analysis of Issues in Human Resource Planning”, is designed for the Higher Degree By Research (HDR/PhD) students in Management (Public Administrations). This course will help the students focus on the various work environment factors that affect productivity and organisational performance.

Furthermore, this course introduces the psychological, social and organisational aspects of modern working practices. It familiarises the students with the ability to design effective ways to manage new working environments.

The course, “Management for Sustainable Development” seeks to analyse the most widely used concepts and principles of development to develop the management system. The course “Advanced Financial Theories” is a core course in the financial management sub-discipline, which is used as a basic knowledge by identifying, introducing and explaining theories, approaches, models and techniques that can be used in Financial Engineering, International Finance, Banking, Insurance, Financial Law and Real Estate. This course considers all financial theories and models, introduces the first scientific, financial theory called Marques’s portfolio theory in 1956, and develops theories and approaches with financial doctoral students in various fields.

  1. Advanced Financial Risk Management

The course “Advanced Financial Risk Management” is a core course in the financial management sub-discipline, considered a scientific and professional identity. In this course, the importance of the philosophy of financial risk and professionalism related to financial businesses is explained and discussed by introducing theories, models, patterns, techniques of risk assessment, and identifying the types of risk and its causes.

  1. Advanced Financial Econometrics

The course “Advanced Financial Econometrics” is a core course in the financial management sub-discipline. This course provides a forum for the Higher Degree by Research students to discuss and generate ideas on various research issues in Advanced Financial Econometrics. Students conduct an in-depth study of a research topic of their choice, discuss issues with their lecturers in the field of research, work in discussion groups, debate, and problem solve on selected issues. In the research seminar, the students can integrate their knowledge, skills and practical experience gained in the program.

  1. Financial Law

“Financial Law” is a core course in the postgraduate program in management, financial management discipline. In this course, legal aspects of financial issues such as financial law in the capital market, business law, and identifying the pillars of business companies are explained and discussed by valuable topics such as legislative structure, legal personality, the legal-financial structure of capital changes in commercial companies, especially joint-stock companies in Iranian and French law as well as minority shareholder rights in commercial companies.

The course “Research Seminar” is designed for the Higher Degree students by Research (HDR/ PhD) students of Management. This is a specialised course in the financial management sub-discipline. This course provides a forum for the Higher Degree by Research students to discuss and generate ideas on various research issues in financial management. The course “Mergers and Acquisitions” is designed for the Higher Degree students by Research (HDR/ PhD) students of Management. This is a specialised course in the financial management sub-discipline. Prerequisites for this course are ‘advanced financial theory’ and ‘advanced financial risk management, which address one of the most important topics of today’s businesses.

  1. Advanced International Banking

The course “Advanced International Banking” is a specialised course providing an outline of international banking for the Higher Degree by Research (HDR / PhD) students in management.  This course deals with the recent developments and a solid understanding of international banking. Moreover, this course introduces students to political, social and cultural aspects of the evolutionary processes of international banking.

  1. Advanced Derivative Pricing

“Advanced Derivative Pricing” is a core elective course in the PhD of Management program, financial management sub-discipline. This course provides a forum for the Higher Degree by Research students to discuss and generate ideas on various research issues in Advanced Derivative Pricing. Students conduct an in-depth study of a research topic of their choice, discuss issues with their lecturers in the field of research, work in discussion groups, debate, and problem solve on selected issues.   1. Advanced Topics in Islamic Financial Instruments

“Advanced Topics in Islamic Financial Instruments” is a core elective course in PhD in management program, financial management sub-discipline. This course provides a forum for the Higher Degree by Research students to discuss and generate ideas on various research issues in Advanced International Banking. Students conduct an in-depth study of a research topic of their choice, discuss issues with their lecturers in the field of research, work in discussion groups, debate, and problem solve on selected issues.

The course, “Philosophy of Management”, is designed for the Higher Degree By Research (HDR/PhD) students in Management (Industrial Discipline). This course introduces the PhD students to philosophical approaches to understand organisations and their management. Students will discuss various philosophical lenses during the semester to make sense of organisational phenomena and better grasp management’s intellectual origins in an organisation.

  1. Philosophy of Organisation and Management Theories

The course “Philosophy of Organisation and Management Theories”   is designed to provide students with a robust theoretical understanding of organisations, management, and the fundamentals of organisational concepts.

  1. Management Science Methodology

The course “Management Science Methodology” takes a fundamental view on Management Science or Operations Research, including concepts, paradigms, and segmentations. Moreover, this course discusses some of the research issues related to the science of management.

  1. Quantitative Modelling in Management

The course “Quantitative Modelling in Management” identifies quantitative modelling paradigms and multivariate data analysis. This course covers the underlying theory required to understand the multivariate methods and their applications in data analysis. Students will learn modelling skills and problem structuring methods (PSM) in management research.

  1. Fuzzy Management Science

The course “Fuzzy Management Science”  discusses complex problems, and changes in the management environment can be more easily handled by bringing fuzzy logic into management practice. This course familiarises students with fuzzy logic basics and their applications. Moreover, students will be able to design a fuzzy management system after completing this course.

  1. Systems Dynamics

The course “Systems Dynamics”  introduces systems thinking and system dynamics modelling. It also discusses the applications of these two in industrial and organisational contexts. Students use simulation models, management flight simulators, and case studies to develop conceptual and modelling skills to design and manage high-performance organisations in a dynamic world.

  1. Designing Advanced Manufacturing Systems

The course “Designing Advanced Manufacturing Systems” develops and enhances students’ manufacturing and operations management knowledge. This course familiarises students with the philosophy and origination of the latest and sophisticated manufacturing and operations systems and technologies.

  1. Advanced Inventory Management Systems

The course “Advanced Inventory Management System” familiarises postgraduate students with the knowledge to manage inventories wisely. Effective inventory management can save time and money, and these courses will prepare students how. This course investigates the advanced and the latest inventory management models, including designing related systems.

  1. Application of Artificial Intelligences in Management

The course “Application of Artificial Intelligences in Management” is designed to train students to face complex real-world problems in the context of ambiguity and uncertainty. This course also familiarises postgraduate students with various intelligent decision-making systems’ capabilities, architectures, modules, and designs are another objective.

  1. Advanced Supply Chain Management

The course “Advanced Supply Chain Management” is designed to meet the need of fostering well-trained professionals to plan and manage the activities through which products and services are created and distributed to customers. Advanced supply chain management provides integrated learning opportunities for students to effectively manage complex supply chains and prepare them for a wide range of knowledge about critical and novel issues around supply chain management.

  1. Nonlinear Programming

The course “Nonlinear Programming” is designed to help postgraduate students tackle organisational problems. This course investigates a theoretical foundation and methods to solve nonlinear programming (NLP) problems.

  1. Data Mining in Management

The course “Data Mining in Management” introduces the basic concepts, principles, methods, techniques of data mining. The course provides students with an appreciation of the uses of data mining software in solving business decision problems. Students will learn the theoretical background of several commonly used data mining techniques, discover data mining, and acquire practical skills in data mining algorithms.

 

Information Technology (IT)- Core Courses

  1. Applied Statistics with Software

The course “Applied Statistics with software” is designed for the higher education students of management (Information Technology Discipline). PhD students need to apply statistical analysis to a large variety of practical problems using SPSS and MATLAB. So this course helps students to use statistical analysis software in science and industry.

This course covers the primary statistical analysis topics ( i.e. data description, statistical inference, classification and regression, factor analysis, survival data, directional statistics). Students will also understand the statistical analysis ethical concerns, data validity, data mining techniques, and multivariate.

  1. Research Methodology

The course “Research Methodology” discusses the methods of conducting successful research studies by helping students develop a subject of their research, develop their critical analysis skills, and skills to apply research theory and methods to write research proposals, reports, and dissertations.

  1. Technical English

The course “Technical English” is intended for PhD students to practise English in industry and commerce to improve their academic performance. This course aims to develop the four skills of reading, writing, listening and speaking for the business-specific purpose by employing a wide range of creative activities.

This course introduces technical terms in Information Technology (IT) through technical texts. This course also aims to develop the critical reading skills of postgraduate students through analysing texts.

The course “Management Information Systems” is designed for postgraduate students in management (IT discipline). Information systems are one of the primary tools available to business managers to achieve operational excellence, develop new products and services, improve decision-making, and achieve competitive advantage. PhD Students in this course will find the most up-to-date and comprehensive overview of information systems used by business firms today. This course analyses the use of information technologies and systems at business firms to evaluate the achievement of their corporate objectives.

The course “Knowledge Management” is designed for the postgraduate students of Management (IT discipline). Knowledge Management is the deliberate and systematic coordination of an organisation’s people, technology, processes, and organisational structure.

This course familiarises students with knowledge as the main factor of competitive advantage in organisations and the implementation models of knowledge management in the organisation step by step.

The course “Information Economics” is designed for the postgraduate students of Management (IT disciple). Data is a resource whose value can only be realised when analysed effectively. Understanding what our data can tell us will help organisations lead successfully and accelerate business transformation.

The course “Information Economics” brings new insights into how to best optimise our learning from data critically to meeting future challenges. This course introduces students to the new concepts, paradigms, and data tsunami created in the digital age and its impact on economic issues. The concepts covered in this course include data industry, sharing economics, network economics, rotational economics, creative economics and other digital configuration paradigms.

The course “Philosophical Analysis of Islamic Management” is designed for the postgraduate students of management (IT Discipline). Researchers in management want to find the organisational pattern of progressive and oriented excellence based on time and place requirements in the framework of the management value system.

  1. Philosophical Analysis of Organisation and Management

The course “Philosophical Analysis of Organisation and Management” is designed for postgraduate management (IT Discipline) students. Familiarity with management theories is one of the essential parts of this course. The nature of the management field requires researchers to become familiar with the philosophy of management theories and organisational behaviour and the origin of their creation to apply these theories to exploit information technology properly.

  1. Research Methodology in Information Systems

The course “Research Methodology in Information Systems” is designed for PhD students in Management (IT Discipline). Most research studies in information systems employ qualitative design.   This course is an all-inclusive treatment that leads students through a qualitative research project, including research design, data collection, analysis, theorising, writing, and research disengagement. The course “Intelligent Business” is designed for the postgraduate students of management (IT discipline). This course begins with an overview of Business Intelligence (BI) and Decision Support. It further introduces data warehousing and data foundations.  The course also covers descriptive and reporting analytics, specifically visualisation and business performance measurement. Students will also learn about the foundations of decision making. So the course will cover predictive analytics and decision analytics, and other decision support systems topics.

All students will need to meet the minimum English Language Requirements, university general entry requirements, and course-specific requirements such as pre-requisite subjects.

English Language Requirements

This degree requires a minimum of an/a

  •  IELTS (Academic) of 6, with no Writing and Speaking band less than 6, or
  • TOEFL (iBT) of 65, with no individual band less than 62
  • IAU-EPT of 50
  • TOLIMO of 500
  • MCHE of 50

For students who do not meet the English Language Requirement through citizenship or prior studies in English in an approved country, an approved English language test completed within the last two years must be provided.

General Entry Requirements

  • Admission to the post-graduate program at the Islamic Azad University-UAE Branch requires the completion of a graduate program (Master’s degree).
    • Students must have a Master’s degree in management to be admitted to the Doctorate of Business Administration program. If the applicant holds an degree in other programs, or disciplines other than Business Administration, they need to complete some foundation courses in the first semester of their studies.
